Nakita Shavers is Dinerral Shavers’ younger sister. She is the founder and director of the Dinerral Shavers Educational Fund, formed in the wake of her brother’s murder in 2006 while Nakita was on leave from her studies.
In 2006, Nakita and the Hot 8 Brass Band paired up with Silence is Violence, run by Baty Landis and Tamara Jackson, for a silent march on City Hall. The march was designed as a protest against the spike in violent crime and homicides in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Nakita has since completed her studies and continues to direct the Dinerral Shavers Educational Fund, which offers scholarships and works to improve music education in New Orleans.
